James Blake- Industrial Soundscapes

This dude is interesting. First off, don’t confuse him with James Blunt, as much as we love the Blunts, this James has better music.
His music has a certain vibe to it, that combines a deep wobble with his soft voice that results in a spacey feel. The slowness of tracks like Lindisfarne I, have a tone to it that one can just chill out to and really feel the vocoder. The light industrial sounds in the background give the songs a no gravity feel, while the use of the clicks in the background seem to represent time clicking forward. The no gravity feel, combined with lyrics like “I don’t know about my dreams…I’m falling, falling falling.” (The Wilhelm Scream) (see video) portray a message of depression and uncertainty. The experimental style takes bits from dubstep, trip-hop and industrial music.
I suggest buying the physical CD to see the artwork that he has included with the lyrics. The pictures express similar messages that his music does; confusion, uncertainty and dizziness. My favorite track of the LP is called I Never Learnt To Share. Here are the lyrics to that song:
My brother and my sister don’t speak to me
but I dont blame them.
The brevity of the lyrics say a lot by themselves. I look forward to hearing what James has in store for the future. Till then, enjoy my favorite track from the record, titled The Wilhelm Scream
